Mendonça Filho’s debut feature, O Som Ao Redor (Neighbouring Sounds, 2013) was a wry comedy examining the social dynamics in a bourgeois Recife apartment complex. Music permeates Aquarius, a movie about time, artefacts, gentrification, class differences and one woman’s struggle to preserve her dignity by saving the building in which she and her family have lived for decades. The first song we hear in Aquarius is Hoje (which means “today”), a swanky 1969 ballad by Brazilian singer Taiguara, over black-and-white photos of the same beach, decades before. For a moment, it almost feels like the tune is brand new and we’re there with them, in the moment, hearing it for the first time. Clara (Bárbara Colen) pops a cassette in the tape deck and they all get down to the funky fresh sounds. The year is 1980 and Clara, her brother, his new girlfriend and a friend are driving on the beach in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, in Brazil’s north-east. The second song we hear in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s enchanting second feature, Aquarius, is Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust.
